Samsung Air Source Heat Pumps (Review)

Samsung Air Source Heat Pump Review in Summary

Our Samsung heat pump review is fairly substantial. So, if you’re short on time, bookmark this page for later, and read this quick overview instead…

The net cost of installing a new model Samsung heat pump is going to be in the region of £4,500-£6,000 after the grant, excluding radiators. This is likely to be comparable to a like-for-like unit from Ideal or Vaillant. While the the Samsung unit itself is cheaper, they insist on a third party immersion in order to get the extended 7 year warranty and the unit doesn’t have an integrated pump, so you need to purchase these separately.

Whilst these units generally cost in excess of £12,000 to install, it’s likely you’ll be eligible for £7,500 funding via the Boiler Upgrade Scheme.

The most popular units in the Samsung range are:

  • EHS Monobloc: perfect if you have plenty of outdoor space
  • EHS TDM Plus: great for new builds and those with limited outdoor space
  • EHS Split: ideal for properties where the building layout means installation is complex

Expect a typical Samsung unit to come with a 2-year warranty. However, this can be bumped to a fairly substantial 7-year warranty by using a certified installer and adding the back up immersion.

And finally, all Samsung heat pumps have smart connectivity. You'll be able to connect via their SmartThings app, helping to automate your system, as well as control it remotely.

How Much Does A Samsung Heat Pump Cost To Install?

Samsung’s air source heat pump range is priced in the mid-high range in comparison to similar heat pumps from other leading brands.

Jump over to our air source heat pump reviews page to determine which are the best heat pump brands on offer in the UK…

Taking a unit such as the 8kW Samsung EHS HT Quiet, you’d expect to pay just under £4,000  from an online plumbing merchant (such as City Plumbing); this is the unit only, not including fittings or labour for installation.

By comparison, you’d expect the likes of the Vaillant aroTHERM to cost just over £4,000 at face value and the Ideal Logic Air to cost something similar to the Samsung, from the same merchants. However, the Vaillant can look quite similar in overall price once the additional costs are factored in.

Heat pump installation costs vary depending on the brand and output you choose, complexity of installation, whether or not you need smart controls and more.

But typically, you should expect installation prices to be in the region of £12,500 without many radiator changes.

Luckily, this isn’t the price you’ll actually pay. The UK government funds a range of green energy installations. In the case of heat pumps, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme entitles the majority of UK households to up to £7,500 in funding.

So, the overall cost you’ll pay for a Samsung heat pump installation is likely to be around £5,000. To check if you qualify for funding (most households do), you can use our eligibility checker here

Samsung Product Range

Below, we’ll quickly review the most popular units in the Samsung range including the:

  • EHS Monobloc
  • EHS TDM Plus
  • EHS Split

EHS Monobloc Air Source Heat Pump

Samsung's EHS Monobloc air source heat pump range is the most popular. It’s an all-in-one outdoor unit, so a substantial outdoor installation space is required.

You'll have a tonne of different options within the range, including the likes of the Samsung EHS HT Quiet. This unit operates as low as 35 dB(A) in quiet mode, yet can provide flow temperatures of up to 70°C (not in quiet mode) and still be able to operate with outdoor temperatures as low as -25°C.

You can read our full review of the Samsung EHS HT Quiet here

Across the Monobloc range you'll have access to outputs from 5kW up to 16kW, meaning there's a unit for most small-medium sized properties.

Efficiency varies, with some units offering a Seasonal Coefficient of Performance (SCOP) of up to 5. Essentially, for every 1kWh of electricity they consume they'll be able to provide 5kWh of heat; they'll be up to 500% efficient.

The exact efficiency of your unit is going to depend on a few things including:

  • Flow temperate: The higher the flow temperature you use, the less efficient your heat pump will be
  • The refrigerant your unit uses: Some use R290 (such as the EHS R290), which has a lower global warming potential than R32, which is to say how much heat the gas would retain if it was released.
  • Output: Typically, higher output units have a much lower SCOP than smaller units, especially as flow temperature increases

EHS Split Air Source Heat Pump

For those that need to be more flexible when it comes to installation, the Samsung EHS Split air source heat pump is usually the answer.

Thanks to the Split EHS being both an outdoor and indoor unit - connected via refrigerant pipework - where they can be installed and the greater permissible distance between the two units accommodates a range of different building layouts. You will need an F-Gas installer for this unit.

The Samsung Split EHS uses R32, which isn't as eco-friendly, nor as efficient as R290. For this reason, these units have a high Global Warming Potential (GWP) and generally, lower SCOP ratings.

If your property doesn't conform to the norm, the Samsung EHS Split is likely to be suitable, with 4kW-16kW units available.

EHS TDM Plus

The Samsung EHS TDM Plus is a hybrid all-in-one air source heat pump. It's able to offer heating and cooling via air-to-water and air-to-air. It's most suited to new builds, as well as those that have limited external space.

For hot water, you'd couple this with a 200L or 260L water cylinder (both available from Samsung). And with the TDM Plus, it's easy to zone your heating system, so you can have different parts of your property at different temperatures.

Like all Samsung air source heat pumps in this review, you'll have access to smart connectivity. To make the most out of the EHS TDM Plus, you'll need Samsung's SmartThing App. You'll then be able to control your heating and hot water remotely, as well as monitor your energy usage.

The EHS TDM Plus is suitable for properties in the 1-4 bedroom range, with outputs of 4.4kW-16kW on offer.

Samsung Heat Pump Warranty

Warranty on an air source heat pump is massively important. As we've mentioned above, you could be forking out in excess of £12,000 for an installation, so you want to be covered for as long as possible.

The standard warranty on the Samsung EHS TDM, EHS Monobloc and EHS Split is just 2-years. However, you'll have this extended to 7-years when you use a Samsung certified installer.

7-years is in line with the warranty offered by other leading brands. Put simply, if you want a Samsung air source heat pump fitted, make sure you use a certified installer.

Smart Connectivity

(Source: Samsung)

All Samsung air source heat pumps can be connected to their SmartThings app.

In terms of control and monitoring, you'll be able to switch your heat pump on and off from anywhere. It’s easy to switch between heating modes, adjust temperature, monitor energy usage and even schedule start and stop times for heating and hot water.

Many aspects of the SmartThings app can be automated. For instance, if the app notices any faults, it can send you an automatic notification.

And, you'll be able to add geolocation routines. For instance, you can set your heating and hot water to energy saving mode when you're a certain distance away from home, and have it automatically switch back on when you're close to arriving.

Samsung's SmartThings app is one of the most advanced out there. All you need to get started is a WiFi connection, the app and a Samsung account.
