Thinking about a new boiler?

If you’re exploring your options, we can give you a fixed-price boiler quote in under a minute, with next-day installation available.

Boiler Change vs Boiler Installation

A boiler change involves swapping your old existing boiler with a more modern, like-for-like unit.

During a boiler replacement, very little changes with your existing heating setup. This includes the likes of the:

Flue position
Pipework
Routing of the condensate pipe
Heating controls (although they're easy to upgrade)
Gas supply
Flow and return

As an example, if your current system uses a combi boiler, a boiler change will mean swapping this for a new combi, rather than changing to a system or regular boiler.

That said, when booking a boiler change your engineer can easily move your boiler to a new location, reroute the flue and condensate pipe, or upgrade your gas mains from the meter.

We've already written a detailed guide to boiler installation costs here.  But in summary, a boiler installation / upgrade involves additional work compared with a straight swap, including:

  • A fresh installation, sometimes in properties that have no existing central heating (including pipework and radiators)
  • Changing a system from one boiler type to another (for example, a system boiler to a combi boiler setup)

As many boiler installations involve complex upgrades (fresh pipework or a boiler moved to a new location), the cost of an installation far exceeds prices you'll be quoted for a like-for-like boiler change.

Average Price To Change A Boiler

The average cost to change a boiler isn't one size fits all. The exact price you pay for a replacement will depend on:

  • The complexity of both the installation and removal of your old unit
  • Your region (labour costs vary by area)
  • Any upgrades (radiators, smart controls etc) you choose to add

For a small to medium sized property with 2-3 bedrooms, one shower and reasonable hot water / central heating demand, you should expect to pay anywhere between £2,250-£3,500.

At the higher end, you'll be getting quotes from large national installers (which are typically much more expensive than the average installer) and have a boiler change that's reasonably complex.

You should also expect to pay approximately £400-£500 more for a system or regular boiler replacement over a combi. Put simply, combi boilers are a lot easier to replace.

Boiler swap prices quoted in the £2,250-£3,500 estimate range assume a few basics about the complexity of your replacement including:

  • A like-for-like boiler swap (combi replaced with a combi)
  • The existing flue (wall or roof) and condensate position is used
  • Existing pipework is used
  • No complex upgrades required to heating controls (including zoning), your gas supply or radiators

There’s a lot of money to be saved by choosing a reputable (but competitively priced) brand. One of these brands is Ideal Heating, featured regularly in our review pages, including this one that covers the best and most reliable boiler brands in the UK

Even their base model (Ideal Logic) comes with a 5-year warranty as standard. And if you go for their flagship model (Vogue Max Combi), you’ll get up to a 12-year warranty.

What’s Included in A Boiler Change Quote?

Not every boiler quote is like-for-like, so make sure your quote is itemised to show everything that's included.

From Dwellow, every boiler replacement will include:

Boiler change, including a Gas Safe certificate
Removal and disposal of your old unit
Magnetic boiler filter to catch heating sludge and protect your system
Chemical inhibitor dosed into the system (breaks down heating sludge so the filter can catch it)
Upgrade if your condensate pipe needs it
Gas main upgrade from your meter (if applicable)
Warranty registration
12-month workmanship warranty

What Affects The Cost of Changing a Boiler?

  1. Boiler Type

The type of boiler you're replacing has a huge bearing on price. Generally, you'll be able to get a like-for-like combi boiler change for around £2,250.

The same swap for a system or regular boiler is likely to cost £2,500-£2,750 as a minimum. And, that's simply because there's a lot more work and materials involved.

For a system boiler, you'll have a hot water cylinder. So, when swapping out your boiler it's worth upgrading your cylinder too, which can sometimes involve additional pipework.

Similar can be said for a regular (a.k.a. heat only) boilers. They are gravity fed so it's likely you'll need replacement feed and expansion tanks.

Overall, expect a system or regular boiler change to be priced £400-£500 more than a combi boiler as an absolute minimum.

  1. Magnetic System Filter

Heating systems build up iron oxide (rust) in them over time. This comes from metal components such as:

  • Radiators and valves
  • Copper pipework
  • Boiler components

As this builds up, it creates a thick black heating sludge. This blocks radiators, pipework, valves and even crucial components in your boiler (such as your heating pump).

Fitting a magnetic system filter is a way to combat this problem and protect your boiler's life. This filter catches heating sludge, removing it from the system; it can be cleaned out with an annual service.

In fact, they're so important that many manufacturers will void a warranty if one hasn't been fitted.

So, when looking at prices for a boiler change, ensure this includes a high quality magnetic system filter. If it doesn't the price of your boiler replacement should be £150-£200 cheaper; this is the average cost of materials and labour to have a filter installed.

We include a magnetic system filter with every combi boiler replacement we complete. You can see the exact price you’ll pay for your boiler swap including filter installation using our clickable tool here

  1. System Flush & Inhibitor

A system flush is essentially, cleaning your heating system of heating sludge before doing a boiler swap.

This ensures your magnetic system filter isn’t overwhelmed with the amount of heating sludge it’s catching.

Alongside this, a boiler engineer will need to add an inhibitor to the system. This helps to break down heating sludge, making it easier for the magnetic system filter to catch it and remove it from your system.

Like a magnetic system filter installation, if your engineer doesn’t flush your system and add a heating inhibitor as part of your quote, it should be £150-£200 cheaper.

  1. Boiler Location

If you’re wanting to have your boiler relocated, this generally comes under an installation / upgrade, rather than a like-for-like boiler change. Prices are going to be substantially higher.

We’ve written a detailed guide to the cost of moving a boiler to a new location here

In short, you should expect to pay anywhere from £600-£800. However, it’s generally cheaper as a bundled service (i.e. alongside a boiler swap), than a standalone service. The simple reason being, your boiler engineer is already on-site.

You can check the overall price of a boiler swap, plus moving it to a new location, using our boiler quote tool here

  1. Gas Pipe Upgrades

Gas pipe upgrades can get expensive very quickly. And in general, they are needed to keep your system inline with current Gas Safe standards.  Generally, an upgrade for a mains gas pipe from your gas meter could cost £100-£200. We include this as standard in all of our boiler replacement quotes.

FAQ

How much does it cost to change a boiler in 2026?

Expect the cost to change a boiler to be in the region of £2,250-£3,500.

On the lower end, this would be a basic combi boiler swap (without upgrades). At the higher end, this would be a replacement of a regular or system boiler, which requires a lot more work and materials (hot water cylinders and / or expansion tanks).

Is changing a boiler cheaper than a full installation?

Yes, much cheaper. A typical combi boiler installation could be as low as £2,250. Expect a heating system (boiler and radiators) installed to cost £5,000+ when utilising existing pipework.

For a fresh installation (no heating system present), expect to pay £7,000+. We’ve got a full guide to heating installation costs here

Does the cost of boiler replacement include labour?

Yes, generally the cost quoted for a boiler replacement will include labour. However, it’s important to check your boiler replacement includes the likes of: magnetic system filter, gas mains upgraded if needed and a system flush.

Can I change a boiler without replacing radiators?

Yes, a boiler can be changed without replacing radiators. It’s advisable to chemically flush out these radiators before installing a new boiler to rid the system of heating sludge.
