Daikin produces a huge range of heat pumps, including air toair and domestic hot water pumps.
However, we’ll only be looking into their air source heatpump range. Their main air source heat pump product is the Altherma and within this range they have the likes of the:
The exact heat pump you’ll need for your property will depend on a range of factors.
For instance, if you live in an older property that lacks insulation, you’ll be leaning towards something like the Altherma 3 HighTemperature unit.
On the flip-side, a new-build property with excellent insulation would benefit from a low temperature unit such as the Altherma 3 LowTemperature R-Split.
No one property is the same. One 3-bedroom property might see a 5kW low temperature unit suffice, whereas another might need anything upto a 10kW.
Take the confusion out of deciding which brand and model you need by using our clickable air source heat pump tool here.
Air source heat pumps are expensive to install. However, if the property is suited to an ASHP the investment pays off in the long term.
A typical gas boiler will cost £3,000 to replace, and installation costs for Daikin heat pumps are generally in the £10,000 range.Unlike a gas boiler, with your air source heat pump you’ll be eligible for a grant via the UK government thanks to the Boiler Upgrade Scheme.
That’s going to entitle you to funding of £7,500 bringing the average installation cost to £2,500, which is less than a typical gas boiler installation. You can read our guide to air source heat pump grants here.
Like any installation, the exact price you pay will vary depending on dozens of factors including:
● How many radiators need to be upgraded (larger radiators work best with air source heat pumps)
● If your pipework needs to be upgraded, and how long it takes to drill core holes to accommodate them
● What size heat pump you need, as the difference between small vs large heat pumps can be in the £1,000s
● The quality of the materials used, a brand like Daikin with a long warranty is more expensive than lesser known brands that come with a short warranty
● The list goes on…!

A Daikin air source heat pump is likely to last anywhere from 15-25 years. Obviously the harder your heat pump needs to work, the shorter its lifespan, which is why it's so important to choose the right size heat pump for your property.
Warranty is what's most important here. Air source heat pumps aren't just expensive to install, they're expensive to repair too; the longer the warranty period the better!
The warranty throughout the Altherma range varies from 3-7years. If you've read any other review we've written, you'll know that 3-years is sub-par. As an example, the Vaillant aroTHERM comes with a solid 7-year warranty across all models.

Whenever investing this kind of cash, it’s worth researching the brand you’re thinking of buying from. One of the best ways to do this is digging through reviews on Trustpilot to see what the brand’s consumers really think.
It will also allow you to get a gauge on what the likes of the after-sales care team are like; that’s who you’ll deal with if you have an issue with your unit during the warranty period.
Jumping over to Trustpilot, we can see that reviews of Daikin are plentiful with nearing 1,500 averaging a solid 4.2 out of 5 stars.
To make a direct comparison, we’ll take a look at Vaillant, the manufacturer of the popular aroTHERM R290 heat pump we mentioned above:
As you can see, Vaillant’s reviews are similar (4.3 versus4.2), although they do have over 20,000 rather than nearing 1,500.
Heat pumps can be noisy, so you'll want to find the quietest one possible.
The Altherma range features some of the quietest heat pump son the market. Many lesser known brands will operate at 60dB(A) or higher. However, leading brands in the heat pump space typically operate in the55-60dB(A) range.
Using the Daikin Altherma 3 Low Temperature for example's sake, you'll see it operates at just 44 dBA - 50 dBA; much quieter than an average heat pump.
Every dB(A) matters, as you can see from this graphic from the Hearing Health Foundation:
Whilst the Daikin Altherma operates at below average noise levels, it's not the quietest unit we install. That title goes to the SamsungEHS HT Quiet R32 which we featured in our list of the best air source heat pumps here.

In any ASHP review, efficiency is one of the most important things to focus on. After all, a small improvement in efficiency could lead to hundreds saved each year on your electricity bills.
Taking the Altherma 3 H HT 7kW as an example, we can see it has a SCOP of 3.33. Essentially, this means for every 1kWh of electricity that it consumes, it will be producing 3.33kWh of heat; it's 333% efficient!
Believe it or not, this isn't the most efficient heat pump on the market. If you click over to our guide covering the most efficient air source heat pumps, you’ll see the Ideal Logic Air has an incredible SCOP of 3.96; it’s 396% efficient.
So, whilst the Daikin Altherma is incredibly efficient, and works at above average efficiency, there are higher efficiency units available.
