Boiler Relocation & Expected Cost

This detailed guide to how much it costs to relocate a boiler is an approximate 10-minute read. So, if you're short on time, bookmark this page for later and simply read this quick-fire summary instead…

The cost to move a boiler to a new location tends to average in the £600-800 range. This can be lower or higher depending on factors such as:

  • Distance from the existing boiler location, to the new one
  • The type of boiler your property uses (combi, conventional or system)
  • Flue location and if it needs to be moved
  • Whether or not you need heating controls to be relocated alongside your boiler

You’ll be able to relocate your boiler to basically anywhere in your property, including your:

  • Garage
  • Utility Room
  • Bathroom
  • Bedroom
  • Kitchen
  • Airing Cupboard
  • Loft

If you’re investing this kind of cash and your boiler is over 10-years, it might be time to consider a replacement.

The cost to move your existing unreliable boiler, will be the same as fitting a new one in that location. You can get a fixed price on screen for a new boiler including the cost of relocation using our boiler quotation tool here

And finally, expect a boiler engineer to take anywhere from 4-6 hours to 2 days to remove your existing boiler and fit it in its new location.

Estimated Cost To Move A Boiler To A New Location

Like any boiler installation job, moving a boiler to a new location in one property is never the same as it might be in another. And that’s going to mean that prices vary a great deal when it comes to the exact cost to move a boiler to a new location.

That said, assuming a fairly basic move, costs to relocate a boiler are likely to sit in the £600-£800 range

For anything other than a basic combi boiler to move to a room that’s next door, it’s likely that costs could spike dramatically.

Everything from your boiler type, the flue location, the distance to where you plan to relocate your boiler and how easy boiler controls are to move, will affect the overall price of moving your boiler.

Locations You Can Move Your Boiler To

There isn’t necessarily a limit on where you can move your boiler to. However, depending on your property’s layout, some locations are going to be more difficult than others. And adding complexity (as well as time) to any boiler installation job is going to increase the overall cost.

Here are the most typical places people move their boiler to.

Garage / Utility Room

Relocating a boiler to a garage or utility room is extremely popular. And assuming the relocation is simple, the cost of moving your boiler will still sit in the £600-£800 range mentioned above.

If you’re not using the full capacity of your garage or utility room and it’s not detached from your property, this could be the perfect place to relocate your boiler. Not only will you save space, you’ll also get rid of any noise the boiler makes when firing up and operating.

Bathroom / Bedroom

For those with large bathrooms, relocating your boiler here could be an option. However, if it connects to a bedroom, you’ll need to determine if the noise of your boiler will be a nuisance, likewise in bedrooms.

Another thing to consider is if your boiler is located on the ground floor currently, relocating it upstairs requires extra work and money. It could cost a further £200-£400 to move your existing boiler upstairs in comparison to keeping it on the same floor.

Kitchen

A lot of compact modern properties already have a boiler fitted in the kitchen. However, you are able to mount it in a new location within your kitchen space if required. For example, if it’s floor standing and taking up space, a Gas Safe engineer will be able to mount it on the wall, enclosing it in a kitchen cupboard.

Typically this is an easy job, and would be well within the £600-800 cost estimate mentioned above.

Airing Cupboard / Loft

If you have space in your airing cupboard and loft, moving your boiler here is a good option. You’ll save space in your main living area, not to mention benefit from a huge reduction in noise; it’s unlikely you’ll hear it in an airing cupboard or loft space.

Depending where your boiler is currently located, the cost involved with moving your boiler to a loft or airing cupboard is likely to be at the high end of the £600-£800 estimate.

Should You Replace Your Boiler

Before deciding on whether or not to move your boiler to a new location, it’s worth doing a spot inspection on your boiler.

The estimated £600-£800 cost to move a boiler will be the same regardless of whether you use your existing boiler, or fit a replacement. If you have an old (10-years old or older), unreliable and inefficient boiler, it makes sense to replace it at the same time as relocating it.

Factors That Affect Boiler Relocation Cost

The cost of moving a boiler is going to vary by 100s of pounds depending on a range of factors including:

  • Where you want to relocate to and the distance
  • Type of boiler you currently have
  • Flue location and if it needs to be changed / moved
  • Boiler controls and if they need to be relocated

Distance To New Location

Whether you plan to fit your boiler in a new location such as a garage, airing cupboard or kitchen, the distance to that new location is what really matters.

New pipework will need to be fitted to connect the boiler up in its new location. So, the further away it is, the more it’s going to cost in terms of both materials (copper pipe, fittings, solder etc) and labour.

Type Of Boiler

Combi boilers are usually the cheapest to install, and the cheapest to move to a new location. That’s because they don’t use cold water storage tanks or hot water cylinders; conventional and system boilers do.

If you have a system boiler or conventional boiler, your Gas Safe boiler engineer may also need to relocate other parts of your heating system such as these water tanks. That’s going to add on £300-£500 or more the overall cost of moving your boiler, if not more.

Flue Location

Changing the location of your boiler’s flue can be extremely costly. If you can’t use the flue in its current location by utilising flue extensions, you may need a new flue, with a new core hole drilled through your property’s brickwork.

Potentially you could spend £100-£300 on materials (flue and flue extensions) as well as a few hundred on labour.

Boiler Controls

If you have old heating controls, it might make sense to simply buy new ones rather than paying for a boiler engineer / electrician to rewire them in the new location.

As an example, a cheap thermostat from a leading brand such as Honeywell or Danfoss could be as little as £30.

How Long Will It Take To Relocate A Boiler?

Moving a boiler generally will take anywhere from half a day to 2 days. Just as the cost of the relocation can change dramatically depending on the complexity of the job, the time taken to get it completed can vary a great deal too.

A simple job such as moving a combi boiler from one area in your kitchen to being wall hung in a kitchen cupboard is likely to be 4-6 hours. A more complex installation requiring a flue in a new location, or changing which floor your boiler is located can suddenly span into a couple of days.
